The company was founded in 1986 as Sierra Trading Post was founded in Sparks, Nevada. They moved their headquarters to Cheyenne in 1986.
The company thrived in the early days of the Internet selling discounted outdoor gear and apparel. It was acquired for $200 million by TJX of Framingham, Massachusetts.
In August 2018, TJX purchased the domain name "Sierra.com" from Activision. The domain was used by a video game company called Sierra Entertainment. The company maintains the division headquarters in Cheyenne.
